VIRUS

Sept. 6, 2016

This project was recently completed with the final delivery of the 200th STA3600A CCD sensor to the University of Texas.

The University of Arizona Imaging Technology Lab has made its first delivery of image detectors to the University of Texas. They’re destined to become part of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX). These detectors which are highly sensitive to light will be an integral part of a fiber optic fed spectrograph. Once completed, the instrument will begin analyzing light from 1 million galaxies over a three year period. The gathered data will add to our knowledge of dark energy, the mysterious force causing the universe to expand at an ever increasing rate. University of Arizona Optical Sciences are contracted to make the optics for HETDEX. In addition to the University of Texas and the UA, Pennsylvania State University, Texas A & M, and several European institutes are involved in this endeavor.
